Conwy info

Conwy is a local government principal area and borough in north Wales. It contains the major settlements of Llandudno, Llandudno Junction, Llanrwst, Betws-y-Coed, Conwy and Colwyn Bay, and has a total population of about 100,000.

The River Conwy (after which the county borough is named) lies wholly within the area: rising in Snowdonia and flowing through Llanrwst en route to the Irish Sea by Conwy. The borough straddles the traditional counties of Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire.

The borough was formed on April 1, 1996 by merging the districts of Aberconwy and Colwyn when it was originally named Aberconwy and Colwyn. However, its council renamed the district a day later, on April 1, 1996 to Conwy. The new name has caused confusion with the town of Conwy; for instance, Royal Mail tell people to not use the name 'Conwy' on mail to the area lest it go to the town of the same name (NB: they advise against the use of postal counties generally).

Conwy, the town, (formerly anglicised to Conway in English) is a town in Conwy county borough, North Wales, UK, which faces the resort of Llandudno across the Conwy Estuary. The town lies in the traditional county of Caernarfonshire.

The walled town of Conwy
Britain‘s smallest house.
Conwy is one of Europe's finest examples of a medieval walled town. The magnificent Conwy Castle was built by Edward I in 1283 to 1289 and is a World Heritage Site.

Conwy has two other tourist attractions that help draw many visitors to the town. Thomas Telford built the Conwy Suspension Bridge which spans the River Conwy next to the castle. It was completed in 1826 and replaced the ferry at the same point. Telford cleverly matched the bridge's supporting towers with the castle's turrets. The crossing of the Conwy river has always been a problem and today the A55 road goes under the river by tunnel. The bridge is now in the care of the National Trust. The Quay House at the quayside in Conwy is often touted as Britain's smallest house, its dimensions are roughly six feet wide by eight feet high.

Conwy is a convenient place from which to explore the mountains of Snowdonia.

About Wales

Wales is a Celtic country and one of the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom (along with England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland). Wales is located in the south-west of Great Britain, and is bordered by England to the east, the Bristol Channel to the south, St George's Channel in the west, and the Irish Sea to the north.

The main population and industrial areas are in South Wales, consisting of the cities of Cardiff, Swansea and Newport and surrounding areas.
