Farnworth info
Farnworth is a town in the borough
of Bolton in England. It lies on the River Irwell
and the River Croal and has a population of around
25,000 people.
The town grew up in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries around the coal mining industry. Other
industry included iron foundries and cotton mills.
Farnworth has a market and a theatre, and is
also known for its underground canals, running
from the mines to Worsley.
In 2005 Farnworth really is a bit depressing.
Being nothing more than an overflow road from
the A666 to Bolton, the village has one main street,
littered with decaying fast food shops, haberdasheries
and pubs which have not been rennovated for many
years. In the not too distant past someone was
shot on the steps of the library whilst arrests
amongs the drug using community are not uncommon.
In reality Farnworth has not changed since the
early 1800's, when the main street was cobbled,
trams and street lighting introduced. About this
time buildings were given roofs and the locals
dis-armed. People have always passed through this
area at speed. In Attempts to avoid this village,
the government built the A666 which mostly by
passes this town, and reduced the need to repave
the roads for a few more years.
If you want to get the real coronation street
experience complete with the violence and poverty
image of the north, this town is not one to miss.
If you are looking for that more cosy image of
lancashire without the homeless created from the
decline of the cotton mills, I suggest the A666.
Failing this there is little point to Farnworth,
though maybe it has oppourtunity to become famous
as in my opinion it has one of the busiest per
capita job centres in the country.
About Manchester
Manchester
is a city in the north-west of
England. The metropolitan borough of Manchester,
with a population of 422,302, lies at the heart
of a large conurbation called Greater
Manchester, with a population of 2,513,468.
Greater Manchester is also a
metropolitan county in England
established in 1974 which covers an area roughly
encompassing the conurbation of Manchester. It
is situated in North West England. It has borders
with the ceremonial counties of Cheshire (inc.
Warrington), Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire
(inc. Blackburn with Darwen) and Merseyside. As
well as Manchester, the county includes major
centres such as Salford,
Bury, Bolton,
Stockport and Wigan.
Greater Manchester is not entirely built-up. Although
Manchester forms a conurbation along with Salford,
Trafford and Stockport,
other boroughs, such as Wigan
and Bury are clearly separate.
Towns in the
Manchester urban area include Salford,
Sale, Altrincham,
Cheadle, Stockport,
Ashton-under-Lyne,
and Oldham, Bury,
Rochdale, Stockport
and Stretford. Places
like Trafford and
Salford can be considered
part of the Manchester urban area in a way that
Wigan or Bolton
are not.
The term "Manchester" is often used
to refer to the entire conurbation, much as "London"
is usually used to mean Greater London, but many
of the constituent parts of Greater Manchester,
such as Salford, Wigan and Bolton, also have separate
identities. People from Manchester are called
Mancunians.
