Eccles info
Eccles is a small town in Greater
Manchester, England that
is in the council area of the City of Salford
but not traditionally part of Salford.
The southern border is bounded by the Manchester
Ship Canal and to the north and northwest are
Swinton and Worsley,
to the east is Salford
and to the west and south west are Chat moss and
Irlam. Up until 1974 Eccles was a borough in itself,
but became part of the council area of the City
of Salford when the metropolitan area/county of
Greater Manchester was created. There are several
different areas that make up Eccles, these are
Peel Green, Patricroft, Barton-upon-Irwell, Winton,
Monton and Ellesmere Park plus Eccles town centre
itself. Eccles frequently appears in the TV show
Coronation Street, with a local supermarket formerly
used as the setting for 'Bettabuys'. A well known
British pastry, the Eccles cake is believed to
have been first made here. Eccles cakes are now
made in Gorton, an area of the City
of Manchester. Since 2000 Eccles has been
served by a branch of the Manchester Metrolink
tram system.
About Manchester
Manchester
is a city in the north-west of
England. The metropolitan borough of Manchester,
with a population of 422,302, lies at the heart
of a large conurbation called Greater
Manchester, with a population of 2,513,468.
Greater Manchester is also a
metropolitan county in England
established in 1974 which covers an area roughly
encompassing the conurbation of Manchester. It
is situated in North West England. It has borders
with the ceremonial counties of Cheshire (inc.
Warrington), Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire
(inc. Blackburn with Darwen) and Merseyside. As
well as Manchester, the county includes major
centres such as Salford,
Bury, Bolton,
Stockport and Wigan.
Greater Manchester is not entirely built-up. Although
Manchester forms a conurbation along with Salford,
Trafford and Stockport,
other boroughs, such as Wigan
and Bury are clearly separate.
Towns in the
Manchester urban area include Salford,
Sale, Altrincham,
Cheadle, Stockport,
Ashton-under-Lyne,
and Oldham, Bury,
Rochdale, Stockport
and Stretford. Places
like Trafford and
Salford can be considered
part of the Manchester urban area in a way that
Wigan or Bolton
are not.
The term "Manchester" is often used
to refer to the entire conurbation, much as "London"
is usually used to mean Greater London, but many
of the constituent parts of Greater Manchester,
such as Salford, Wigan and Bolton, also have separate
identities. People from Manchester are called
Mancunians.
