Castleton info

Castleton is a village in the borough of Rochdale in Greater Manchester.

In the 1800s Castleton was almost the size of Rochdale, its borders went up to half a mile from the centre of Rochdale, taking in many areas such as Sudden, Marland, Brimrod. The only real sign of Castletons shrinkings borders which is still visible today is the existence of Castleton Bowling Club, which is over a mile beyond what is now recognised as Castletons borders.

For a village, Castleton is quite big. Like many other areas of Lancashire its backbone was in the cotton industry, with the fall of 'king cotton' most of the mills have now been knocked down. There are still a handful of mills but most are used for other purposes. Castleton has a canal which runs straight through it. It links Manchester with Rochdale and recent work has meant that narrow boats can now travel from Yorkshire to Manchester, as before there were a number of roads blocking their way.

Castleton has a train station. Up until 1990 it had a very well maintained station building, complete with staff. But as with so many other railway stations, cutbacks meant the building was closed, staff were sacked and you had to buy your ticket on the train. It took them 9 years to finally demolish the station, by which time it was in total ruin. The bridge across had been closed some 5 years earlier as it was deemed unsafe. It took them until 2001 to build a new bridge, which is just some steps linking both platforms via the bridge road. The station is still without a 'station' but it has at least been upgraded and tidied up since the dark days of 1990-1999.

Castleton has some industry, Woolworths is based there, British Steel/Corus has a works there and there are some established Engineering companies in the area.

The village is seperated in two halves by Manchester Road. Manchester Road runs from Rochdale to Middleton.

Cowm Top is a beautiful area of Castleton for it's views of the pennines and Manchester. Sadly this has just fell victim to the long standing battle by a company to build a industrial estate over part of it. Despite winning several cases, eventually the big money won its way. It is a real shame as the area will be ruined.

About Manchester

Manchester is a city in the north-west of England. The metropolitan borough of Manchester, with a population of 422,302, lies at the heart of a large conurbation called Greater Manchester, with a population of 2,513,468.

Greater Manchester is also a metropolitan county in England established in 1974 which covers an area roughly encompassing the conurbation of Manchester. It is situated in North West England. It has borders with the ceremonial counties of Cheshire (inc. Warrington), Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire (inc. Blackburn with Darwen) and Merseyside. As well as Manchester, the county includes major centres such as Salford, Bury, Bolton, Stockport and Wigan. Greater Manchester is not entirely built-up. Although Manchester forms a conurbation along with Salford, Trafford and Stockport, other boroughs, such as Wigan and Bury are clearly separate.

Towns in the Manchester urban area include Salford, Sale, Altrincham, Cheadle, Stockport, Ashton-under-Lyne, and Oldham, Bury, Rochdale, Stockport and Stretford. Places like Trafford and Salford can be considered part of the Manchester urban area in a way that Wigan or Bolton are not.

The term "Manchester" is often used to refer to the entire conurbation, much as "London" is usually used to mean Greater London, but many of the constituent parts of Greater Manchester, such as Salford, Wigan and Bolton, also have separate identities. People from Manchester are called Mancunians.
