Ardwick
Ardwick is an inner-city district of Manchester,
about one mile south east of the city centre.
The village of Ardwick can be traced back to 1282,
when it was known as Atherdwic, and the road between
Manchester and Stockport
runs through it. It was formerly an independent
township but it became part of Manchester when
the Borough of Manchester was formed in 1838.
The boundary between Ardwick and Manchester is
the River Medlock, which hereabouts meanders between
factories and houses.
During the 19th century, Ardwick became heavily
industrialised and it was characterised by factories,
railways and rows of back-to-back terraced houses
being juxtaposed. Various railway companies occupied
a large area of land at Ardwick and by 1915 these
had consolidated to form the Great Central Railway,
the London and North Western Railway and the Midland
Railway.

About Manchester
Manchester
is a city in the north-west of
England. The metropolitan borough of Manchester,
with a population of 422,302, lies at the heart
of a large conurbation called Greater
Manchester, with a population of 2,513,468.
Greater Manchester is also a
metropolitan county in England
established in 1974 which covers an area roughly
encompassing the conurbation of Manchester. It
is situated in North West England. It has borders
with the ceremonial counties of Cheshire (inc.
Warrington), Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire
(inc. Blackburn with Darwen) and Merseyside. As
well as Manchester, the county includes major
centres such as Salford,
Bury, Bolton,
Stockport and Wigan.
Greater Manchester is not entirely built-up. Although
Manchester forms a conurbation along with Salford,
Trafford and Stockport,
other boroughs, such as Wigan
and Bury are clearly separate.
Towns in the
Manchester urban area include Salford,
Sale, Altrincham,
Cheadle, Stockport,
Ashton-under-Lyne,
and Oldham, Bury,
Rochdale, Stockport
and Stretford. Places
like Trafford and
Salford can be considered
part of the Manchester urban area in a way that
Wigan or Bolton
are not.
The term "Manchester" is often used
to refer to the entire conurbation, much as "London"
is usually used to mean Greater London, but many
of the constituent parts of Greater Manchester,
such as Salford, Wigan and Bolton, also have separate
identities. People from Manchester are called
Mancunians.
