St Werburghs info
St. Werburghs is an area in central
north-east Bristol, England. Surrounded by the
M32 motorway, railway embankments and allotment
slopes it has the feel of a green village in the
inner city. The BBC Television series Only Fools
and Horses, which was filmed in and around Bristol,
used the allotments for the episode 'Mother Nature's
Son'
St. Werburghs hosts a City Farm and Climbing
Centre and has been the scene of several popular
environmental campaigns including the development
of a self-build housing community and the establishing
of Narroways Hill as a Millennium Green and wildlife
area.
About Bristol
Bristol is an English city and
county and one of the two administrative centres
of South West England (the other being Plymouth).
From its earliest days, its prosperity has been
linked to that of the Port of Bristol, the commercial
port which originated in the city centre, but
which has now migrated to the Bristol Channel
coast. Bristol extends to this coast and includes
Avonmouth, where much of the current port is located.
Notable areas in and surrounding the city include
Clifton, Filton and Patchway. (These last two
areas are outside the present city boundary, in
South Gloucestershire.)
Bristol is England's eighth, and the United Kingdom's
eleventh, most populous city. It had been, for
half a century, the second largest English city
after London,
until the rapid rise of Liverpool, Manchester
and Birmingham, in the 1780s.
