Patchway is a town on the northern
outskirts of Bristol, England. It is twinned with
Clermont l'Herault, France and Gauting, Germany.
It is home to several industries and Cribbs Causeway,
the largest shopping centre in southwest England.
Patchway lies to the north of the Filton Airfield,
important in the aerospace industry, and on the
M4 and M5 motorways and the mainline railway,
and is near to Avonmouth docks, accounting for
the amount of industry in the town. It also has
the A38 road and a dual carriageway bypass road
running throught it, which means it has heavy
traffic.
About Bristol
Bristol is an English city and
county and one of the two administrative centres
of South West England (the other being Plymouth).
From its earliest days, its prosperity has been
linked to that of the Port of Bristol, the commercial
port which originated in the city centre, but
which has now migrated to the Bristol Channel
coast. Bristol extends to this coast and includes
Avonmouth, where much of the current port is located.
Notable areas in and surrounding the city include
Clifton, Filton and Patchway. (These last two
areas are outside the present city boundary, in
South Gloucestershire.)
Bristol is England's eighth, and the United Kingdom's
eleventh, most populous city. It had been, for
half a century, the second largest English city
after London,
until the rapid rise of Liverpool, Manchester
and Birmingham, in the 1780s.
