Clifton info
Clifton is an urban village in
Bristol, England. It is one of the oldest and
most affluent areas of the city, much of it having
been built with profits from tobacco and the slave
trade. Situated to the west of Bristol's city
centre, it was at one time a separate settlement
but became attached to Bristol by continuous development
during the Georgian era and was formally incorporated
into the city in the 1830s.
Clifton ward, which includes Hotwells but which
is limited to the north east by Pembroke Road
rather than Whiteladies Road, has a population
of 10,293 (2001). 27% of the population between
16 and 74 are in full-time education.
Clifton is home to many buildings of the University
of Bristol; Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Clifton
Suspension Bridge; the Roman Catholic Clifton
Cathedral; Clifton College; Bristol Zoo; BBC Bristol;
and Clifton Down, part of The Downs, a very large
public open space.
"Clifton Village" is a name given to
the area of Clifton near the Clifton Suspension
Bridge, away from the University precinct and
Whiteladies Road, the main route to north west
Bristol. Clifton Village is based around a small
traditional high street.
About Bristol
Bristol is an English city and
county and one of the two administrative centres
of South West England (the other being Plymouth).
From its earliest days, its prosperity has been
linked to that of the Port of Bristol, the commercial
port which originated in the city centre, but
which has now migrated to the Bristol Channel
coast. Bristol extends to this coast and includes
Avonmouth, where much of the current port is located.
Notable areas in and surrounding the city include
Clifton, Filton and Patchway. (These last two
areas are outside the present city boundary, in
South Gloucestershire.)
Bristol is England's eighth, and the United Kingdom's
eleventh, most populous city. It had been, for
half a century, the second largest English city
after London,
until the rapid rise of Liverpool, Manchester
and Birmingham, in the 1780s.
