Canons Marsh info

Canons Marsh is an inner city area of Bristol, England, of approximately one square kilometer. Canons Marsh is situated on the north side of Floating Harbour, immediately to the west of the River Frome spur (St Augustine's Reach) of the harbour. Canons Marsh borders Hotwells to the west, Clifton to the north, and the city centre to the north east.

Canons Wharf was once one of the busiest quays in the docks, with its own branch of the Bristol Harbour Railway, cranes and a goods shed. The area was also the location of the city gas works. With the decline of industry throughout the 20th century Canons Marsh was cleared to make way for urban renewal. Due to pollution, however, the gas works remained derelict for several years. The area is now the location of At-Bristol, the South West offices of Lloyds TSB bank, a campus of Bristol City College and several bars, resturants and apartment buildings. As of 2005 renewal continues with the construction of several mixed use buildings.

About Bristol

Bristol is an English city and county and one of the two administrative centres of South West England (the other being Plymouth). From its earliest days, its prosperity has been linked to that of the Port of Bristol, the commercial port which originated in the city centre, but which has now migrated to the Bristol Channel coast. Bristol extends to this coast and includes Avonmouth, where much of the current port is located. Notable areas in and surrounding the city include Clifton, Filton and Patchway. (These last two areas are outside the present city boundary, in South Gloucestershire.)

Bristol is England's eighth, and the United Kingdom's eleventh, most populous city. It had been, for half a century, the second largest English city after London, until the rapid rise of Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, in the 1780s.
